A Nursery Full of Babies
Shhhhhh... there's sleeping. Actually, they're not sleeping, they're growing big and strong. I'm talking about my little baby seedlings that were started indoors about a month and a half ago. It almost brings tears to my eyes to see how big they're getting in such a short time. Really though, this is the most fun I've had in ages.
My husband must think I'm crazy because I keep barging into his office, kneeling down on the floor and looking eagerly over the trays of seedlings at least 3 times a day when I get home from work. If I could camp out there and watch them grow, I would. Like a proud parent, I can't help but show pictures of them here:
Most of them have graduated out of 2" cells into 4" cow pots. Cow pots, you ask? A very new and cool invention from a family farm of cattle ranchers. They didn't know what to do with all that manure, so they composted it and pressed it into bio-degradable 3" and 4" pots for transplanting. When you transplant them to your garden, you just bury the pot. The manure fertilizes the plant as the pot breaks down. This has a high nerd-factor for me. I couldn't resist. So here's a brief list of what I started from seed this spring:
8 types of heirloom tomatoes (Cherokee Purple, Green Zebra, Stupice, Burbank Red Slicing, Tigerella, Yellow Perfection, Yellow Pear, and Roma). That last one isn't an heirloom, but I couldn't leave out Roma.
Lettuce Leaf Basil
Hale's Best Jumbo Muskmelon
Imperial Black Beauty Eggplant
Anaheim Chili Pepper
Jalapeno Chili Pepper
Flat Leaf Parsley
Early Russian Cucumber
2 types of Cosmos
And just for the heck of it, cilantro in the remaining cells.
The cilantro has been transplanted into the garden already, with daily patrols to kill off the slugs that seem to have discovered the new addition to the herb garden. The muskmelons are being hardened off as we speak. Tomorrow they will go in the ground. There is a little "moving up" day party planned afterward.
Just kidding. Although, I'll probably take pictures to commemorate the occasion.
